Workshop Safety

I'm super excited that you’re going to be joining us in the workshop!

However it's very important that you read this page to ensure you keep yourself and others around you safe.

Please read this document as it outlines important health and safety information related to typical workshop situations.

You are responsible for your own safety at all times.

Jewellery making involves using hand tools, power tools and machinery - all of which you are likely to use on any course with us.  It’s important to understand and be comfortable with the tools and how to use them; for your own safety and others in the workshop.

If you have any questions send an email to info@kasasagi-jewellery.co.uk or ask your tutor at the start of your workshop.

Dress

Silversmithing can be physical and messy, with dust, metal filing, chemicals and polish in regular use.

  • Please dress in sensible clothes that may get dirty or damaged

  • No long flowing sleeves

  • No open toed shoes

  • Long acrylic nails are not recommended as they’re likely to be damaged

  • Long hair should be tied back

  • No long dangling jewellery

Dust

Sanding, buffing and drilling can create fine metal dust particles. It is advised to wear a dust mask when undertaking these operations.

Soldering, Casting and Smelting

You will be working with high temperature flames in the workshop. It’s important to

  • Be aware of the area you are working in; remove other flammable items from the area such as gas canisters

  • When smelting always wear the appropriate protective gear

  • Always quench items in water before putting them in acid

Chemicals

You will use chemicals in processes such as acid etching, oxidizing, soldering, cold enameling, safety pickling. In all uses you should:

  • Wear gloves when handling chemicals

  • Work in a well ventilated area

  • Undertake the process in the sink or near a water source

  • Do not lean over chemicals or processes and breathe in

  • Do not use chemicals in busy or hectic areas of the workshop

  • Thoroughly rinse all equipment and jewellery afterwards

Power Tools

Power tools in the workshop include drills, buffing machines and grinders. Processes may generate fine metal dust or throw off shavings. Dust masks and eye protection are available in the workshop.
